Research Summary

Alex joined the CDT for Fuel Cells and their Fuels in October 2016. Previously, he graduated from the Department of Chemical Engineering of the University of Patras (Greece) in July 2013 with a Diploma in Chemical Engineering and a Postgraduate Specialisation Diploma (MSc) in “Environment and Energy” orientation in March 2016 from the same department.

His current research is on fuel cells using liquid fuels at University of Loughborough.

He is funded through the EPSRC CDT  in Fuel Cells and their fuels: EP/L015749/1.

Qualifications

Postgraduate Specialisation Diploma (MSc) in Environment and Energy, Department of Chemical Engineering, University of Patras (2016).

Diploma in Chemical Engineering, Department of Chemical Engineering, University of Patras (2013)

Biography

Alex graduated from his 5-year undergraduate programme in 2013. During the course of his degree, he completed a 1 month internship placement at Hellenic Defence Systems S.A., working on the aluminium anodising process, and a 1 year research diploma thesis on PEM fuel cells. During his 2.5-year postgraduate studies he completed his research MSc thesis on CO2 hydrogenation.

Alex’s most important research milestones were:

·         Diploma thesis: “Study of the triode operation of polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFC)”

·         Postgraduate (MSc) thesis: “Study of the metal – support interaction during the hydrogenation of CO2 towards hydrocarbons using supported Ru and Co catalysts”

Both completed in the Laboratory of Chemical and Electrochemical Processes under the supervision of Professor Constantinos Vayenas.

Research

His current research subject is “Developing Next Generation Direct Fuel Cell Systems, using Liquid Fuels for Building and Automotive Applications” under the supervision of Professor Wen-Feng Lin in Loughborough University.

Other activities

Alex enjoys many activities, such as cycling and escape-room games.
