As demand for rail transportation continues to rapidly increase, significant challenges have arisen to many railways in terms of capacity, carbon emissions, cost and customer satisfaction (the 4Cs). To meet these challenges, new technologies have been gradually introduced to rail transportation to improve the 4Cs. The 2016 IEEE International Conference on Intelligent Rail Transportation provides a forum for scientists and engineers working in academia, industry and government to present their latest research findings and engineering experiences in application of 'New Technologies to Improve Railway Capacity, Carbon emission, Cost and Customer satisfaction'.
