Railway Division Chairman's Address - Sustaining the Future.
Speaker: Richard East
The presentation will illustrate how engineers can contribute to a successful railway industry of the future. This will include addressing challenges arising from:
- Continued passenger and freight growth
- Sustainability considerations including fuel choice, emissions
- Train control options to improve capacity
- Opportunities provided by enhanced communications
- Transport modal shift
The presentation will also provide examples of how the industry should become more system orientated and use experience gained in Europe and other parts of the world. The presentation will also review how the industry should take advantage of imminent changes resulting from Crossrail and High Speed Rail.
Speaker Biography:
Richard East works within Atkins and has spent several years working in Denmark on ERTMS and new vehicle projects. He has been part of the sucessful Inter City Express Programme resulting in orders for over 1100 new InterCity vehicles including both bi-mode and electric vehicles.
Richard joined the rail industry in 1977 and was sponsored through University by British Rail. He gained experience in the regional maintenance organisation in Scotland after graduation as well as specialist engineering in Derby.
He also gained project management experience with new dual voltage electric multiple units and station refurbishment for London Underground.
