Our facility offers a three-day familiarisation course in the School of Metallurgy and Materials workshop.
This course is on a 1:1 basis with one of our most experienced engineers, where you will learn about and use various equipment.
It will give students and technicians a basic knowledge of some Mechanical Workshop techniques to assist them in the design of research apparatus.
The course provides practical training in a variety of machining processes. This involves producing an aluminium component from an engineering drawing (above) The aluminium component has no useful function other than being a "paperweight' to serve as a reminder of the different machining processes.
By completing this course, and with the agreement and supervision of a Workshop staff member, you will be able to access the workshop facility to carry out simple machining tasks or modifications.
(This course is NOT designed for using equipment outside of the Met and Mat workshop facility.)
Booking a slot is required when using the workshop facilities and the task will be agreed with a workshop staff member before work commences.
