Taking Part

mTBI-Predict is recruiting patients with mild traumatic brain injury, and healthy controls without mTBI.

If you are a patient

If you are a patient who has suffered a mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) in the last 3 months you may be eligible to take part in the mTBI-Predict study.

Please register your interest in the study by contacting our study research team at srmrcresearchnurses@uhb.nhs.uk.

You will be given the option to join the study in one of three ways:

  1. Main Study. This is for patients who have suffered an mTBI in the last 3 months. Depending on when your injury was you will attend between 1 and 3 hospital visits where our researchers will take a small sample of blood and saliva, and look at your vision, balance, and brain health. You may also be invited to attend between 1 and 3 brain imaging days. You will also be asked to attend a short video call with a researcher a day or so before your visit to collect some basic information about you and your health. The Main Study Participant Information Sheet will explain more.
  2. Case-Control Study. Also for patients who have suffered an mTBI in the last 3 months. You will follow the same study as the Main Study but will be invited to attend one additional hospital visit and brain imaging day at 6 months after your injury. The Case-Control Participant Information Sheet will explain more.
  3. Biological Variability Study. If your mTBI was within the last 21 days you will be invited to join the Biological Variability Study. If you agree you will do everything in the Main Study, but be invited to attend an additional 3 hospital visits, or 4 brain imaging days. The Biological Variability Study Participant Information Sheet will explain more.

As a thank you for your time we will pay you £150 for each hospital or imaging visit you attend. We will also reimburse your travel costs.

If you are interested in becoming a healthy control

If you have not had a head injury in the last 3 months and are aged between 18 and 60 you may be eligible to join the study as a Healthy Control participant.

Please register your interest in the study by contacting our study research team at srmrcresearchnurses@uhb.nhs.uk.

You will be given the option to join the study in one of two ways:

  1. Healthy Case-Control Study. If you agree to take part in this study, you will be invited to attend one full day at hospital where our researchers will take a small sample of blood and saliva, and look at your vision, balance, and brain health, and one full day at an imaging centre where we will capture images of your brain including an MRI scan. We will also ask you to complete some short tests and questionnaires on a mobile app for 3 months after. You will also be asked to attend a short video call with a researcher a day or so before your visit to collect some basic information about you and your health. The Healthy Case-Control Participant Information Sheet will explain more.
  2. Healthy Biological Variability Study. If you agree to take part in this study, you will be invited to attend 4 full days within 12 days at hospital. You will also be asked to attend a short video call with a researcher a day or so before your visit to collect some basic information about you and your health. The Healthy Variability Study Participant Information Sheet will explain more.
