Over the past two decades Prof David Wong has pioneered a portfolio of research in discovery, pathogenesis and translation of oral fluid-based molecular diagnostics. He has revolutionised saliva diagnostics and has significantly contributed to discoveries in salivary transcriptome (extracellular RNA), non-coding RNA, proteome, microbiome and metabolome. Professor Wong has also the development of saliva biomarkers for oral and systemic disease detection (oral cancer, pancreatic, breast, lung and ovarian cancers) and has translated these to functional assays in the clinic.
Professor Wong’s visit coincides with an Institute of Advanced Studies workshop ‘In spitting distance: towards a University of Birmingham centre for the analysis of oral fluids’ which aims to bring together the breadth of oral fluid researchers across the University of Birmingham’s campus. Prof Wong will present a keynote lecture on his research on salivary diagnostics on the evening of the 30th October.
During his visit Professor Wong will also meet to discuss collaborative research projects with colleagues in the Schools of Dentistry and Chemistry and in the Institutes of Cancer and Genomic Sciences, Immunology and Immunotherapy, Inflammation and Ageing, Metabolism and Systems Research and Microbiology and Infection.
If you would like full details of the plans for Professor Wong’s fellowship or would like to meet with him during his visit as an Institute of Advanced Studies Distinguished Visiting Fellow, please contact Lauren Rawlins IAS Administrator.
