The dust clouds caused by helicopter rotor downdraft present a major challenge to aircrew when attempting to land safely in operational theatres such as Afghanistan.
This project, conducted in collaboration with the University’s School of Mathematics, tested the capabilities of three current games engines and toolkits (VBS2, CryEngine2 and Quest3D) in simulating helicopter brownout, as well as developing bespoke, physics-based algorithms for future engine-independent application.
