World Water Day 2025: Glacier Preservation
Ahead of World Water Day, Friday 21 March 2025, there are a range of virtual events that have been organised to bring together experts from various fields to discuss the urgent need for action to address the global water crisis.
World Water Day celebrates water and raises awareness of the 2.2 billion people living without access to safe water. It is about taking action to tackle the global water crisis. A core focus of World Water Day is to support the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 6: water and sanitation for all by 2030.
Events Schedule:
- Monday 17 March 2025 (12-1pm): Prof. Alexander Milner, School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences, 'Climate Change and Glacier-fed rivers'
- 12-1pm, Tuesday 18 March 2025 (12-1pm): Dr Lauren Somers, Dalhousie University, 'High-drogeology: Mountain Groundwater Under Climate Change'
- 12-1pm, Wednesday 19 March 2025 (12-1pm): Prof. Wouter Buytaert, Imperial College London, 'Co-producing local knowledge for global water security'
- Thursday 20 March 2025 (12-1pm): Dr Jon Mackay, BGS, 'Glacier retreat and water resource impact modelling: perspectives from a hydrologist'
- Friday 21 March 2025 (1-3pm): Panel Discussion chaired by the University of Birmingham, featuring guest speakers, 'World Water Day 2025: Glacier Preservation'
