'Being Sport Billy'
Matt will explore his life long passion for sport through his research and education experiences ranging from ergogenic aids to golf biomechanics and into skill acquisition in sport. He will consider how this feeds his passion for developing the next generation of professional sports practitioners through the school's Graduate School of Sport and Professional Practice.
Following his PhD at Birmingham, Matt was a Research Fellow at the university working on a MoD project on heat illness before joining the University's School of Education as a Lecturer in Sports Science as part of the university's long running collaboration with The Professional Golfers' Association of GB&I. Joining the School of Sport and Exercise Sciences (as it was then named) after the merger with the Sport Pedagogy team from Education in 2010, Matt could often be found on a sports pitch of some sort collecting data or working with students.
Matt has held several key leadership roles in the school as Head of Education, Head of Global Engagement and Deputy Head of School before becoming Director of Education for the College in the summer of 2024.
Beyond Birmingham, Matt has worked with several sports bodies including the British Olympic Association, European Tour and The R&A as well as individually with professional sports people. It is through these experiences, combined with his research and love of education that he seeks to drive to development of future sports practitioners.
Everyone is welcome to this event, and all are invited to join Matt after the lecture for refreshments in the Lapworth Museum.
