Speaking Truth To Power: Brexit and the NHS: With Dr David Nicholl, Prof. Jean McHale & Prof. Mark Exworthy.

Join us for this timely event, featuring Dr David Nicholl, Neurologist, researcher and contributor to the Yellowhammer report on Brexit and health.

Dr Nicholl will join us for this seminar at the University of Birmingham to talk about Brexit, professionalism, politics and evidence. This will be followed by two short responses on health policy, law and evidence, by Professor Jean McHale Professor of Health Care Law and Professor Mark Exworthy, Professor of Health Policy and Management. We will finish with a Q&A session with the audience.

Biographies

Dr David Nicholl

Dr David Nicholl is a neurologist, human rights activist, fundraiser for Amnesty International, and online columnist from Belfast, Northern Ireland. In March 2006 he initiated a letter in the medical journal The Lancet, signed by more than 250 medical experts urging the United States to stop force-feeding at the Guantanamo Bay and close down the prison camp. He is also a principal author of a reference work on neurological conditions.

Nicholl holds the position of consultant neurologist at City Hospital & Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham, and is honorary senior lecturer at the University of Birmingham.

Nicholl is a specialist in Parkinson's disease, and is best known scientifically for his participation in the project for cloning a gene, PARK8, linked with at least one form of the disease.

In 2014, Nicholl signed a statement of support for Moazzam Begg, following Begg's arrest for allegations of supporting terrorism in the Syrian Civil War.

He stood for the Liberal Democrats in Bromsgrove at the 2019 general election.

Professor Jean McHale

Professor Jean McHale researches and writes in the area of Health Law and Health Care law. She is the Director of the Centre for Health Law, Science and Policy at Birmingham Law School. Her recent books include European Health Law: Themes and Implications with Tamara Hervey (Cambridge University Press, 2015) and Principles of Medical Law (Oxford University Press, 2017) co-edited with Judy Laing.

Professor McHale was the Principal Investigator on the ESRC UK Changing Europe Initiative Grant “Health Law outside the EU: Immediate, Intermediate and Long Term Impacts” 2017-9 – co-investigators Professor Tamara Hervey (University of Sheffield) and Dr Mark Flear (Queens University Belfast).

She has given evidence on Brexit and its implications for the NHS and Health Law to the House of Commons Health and Social Care Committee and House of Lords EU Committee.

Professor Mark Exworthy

Mark is a Professor of Health Policy and Management at the Health Services Management Centre, University of Birmingham.

Mark has previously held posts at Southampton University, London School of Economics (LSE), University College London (UCL), Oxford Brookes and Royal Holloway University of London. He was also a Harkness Fellow in health care policy, based at University of California-San Francisco (UCSF) (funded by the Commonwealth Fund of New York).
