Birmingham is the original and now one of the largest and most prominent research centres for Pentecostal and Charismatic studies throughout the world.
Birmingham has a long-standing tradition of studying these movements, ranging back over 40 years to the 1970s when the noted scholar of Pentecostalism Walter J. Hollenweger was Professor of Missions in the department. We have an outstanding international reputation with a particularly large community of postgraduate researchers in the area of global Pentecostal and Charismatic movements. As a doctoral researcher in this subject you will become part of the University’s Centre for Pentecostal and Charismatic Studies and a broad network of scholars with access to an extensive collection of documents (including the internationally acclaimed Harold Turner Collection, with over 27,000 documents on the subject of New Religious Movements, African Initiated Churches, Pentecostal and analogous movements worldwide).
