The School of Nursing and Midwifery always welcomes the opportunity to collaborate with partners worldwide.

What is a visiting academic?

Within the term ‘visiting academic’ we aim to include both undergraduate and postgraduate interns, and academic staff, we welcome all healthcare collaborators, and we try to attract healthcare leaders and healthcare chiefs. Please note that we do try to create reciprocal relationships.

We try not to be too prescriptive about the work that a 'Visiting Academic' may do while they are at the University of Birmingham, but we can use links with the NHS and academia. Visits can encompass both research and/or teaching.

How to arrange a visit

To arrange an academic visit, the first stage in organising a visit is for the prospective ‘Visiting Academic’ to establish contact with a named person within the school and discuss the possibilities of an academic visit.

In early meetings between the ‘Visiting Academic’ and the named person within the school, there is a need to establish the funding status; for instance, a discussion of living costs, accommodation costs and a bench fee (£300 per month).

Once the funding status has been established, the next step is to agree upon the body of work and purpose of the visit.

For more information, please refer to International Visitors to the University of Birmingham.

After the purpose of the visit has been firmly established, the named person within the school liaises with the administrator responsible for visiting personnel (email: icsvisitingpersonnel@contacts.bham.ac.uk) to discuss the application process. Please allow 12 weeks’ notice for any visits to the College.

The ‘Visiting Academic’ and the named person within the school both need to complete the necessary paperwork, which is subsequently signed off by the Head of School.
