The Medical School at Birmingham dates back to the 1820s and today comprises a vibrant, outstanding environment in which to study Medicine. Our aims are to train the very best doctors who are safe, competent, good communicators and well placed to meet the demands of a changing National Health Service.
We want our students to have a terrific time, fully enjoying the experience on offer both within and outwith the curriculum. Students are constantly exposed to the research intensive environment provided through the wider College of Medical and Dental Sciences that ensures a research led education ethos nurturing enquiring minds and a thirst for knowledge.
Our students are taught by experts in the field and inspiring role models in Medicine. This together with early exposure to outstanding community based learning comprises “The Birmingham Stamp” that will distinguish Birmingham graduates from those at other Medical Schools. Our student support structures and our activities coordinated through the medical student societies (MedSoc) are some of the best in the country.
The Birmingham Medical School is led by the Head of School, Professor Gillian Condé. Within the School, we host a large number of students studying towards a range of medically-focussed undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.
The Dean of Medicine, Professor Kate Thomas, oversees 400 students in each year of the MBChB Programme (2000 in total), and we have 5 post-graduate programmes. These are led by:
Pre-clinical teaching is largely based within the Medical School at the University whilst clinical teaching involves partnerships with 16 neighbouring NHS Trusts through a well managed teaching academy structure and over a 100 local primary care practices. Opportunities for a wide portfolio of intercalation studies are on offer between years two and three, and three and four of the five-year curriculum.
