Our range of programmes in electronic, electrical, and systems engineering will equip you to meet the technological challenges of the 21st century, from autonomous vehicles [interior of car], embedded computation [electrical board], and renewable energy [wind turbines], to human machine interactions [scientists working on a robot], mechatronics and robotics [students experimenting with equipment]. Study in our state-of-the-art facilities and student spaces, such as our dedicated electronic and electrical student lab, and a brand new design centre which will enrich your learning experience and prepare you for life after study. [Students using computers and experimenting in the design laboratories].

You will be part of a diverse and welcoming community of students and staff who will support you during your time with us. Project work is at the core of our programme, to develop your theoretical and practical knowledge. Highly valued by employers, our projects and assessments are developed with and influenced by industry and research leaders. You will take part in our innovative integrated design project and work collaboratively with engineers across multiple disciplines to tackle real world problems.

[People in industry in hard hats reviewing plans/paperwork] This will put you in good stead to meet industry's needs for graduates who are well versed in subject fundamentals, yet skilled in working across traditional boundaries. [Students in high-visibility bibs standing by electricity pylons]. Your Birmingham degree will ensure you stand out in a competitive job market. [Students in labs using communications and robotics equipment]. And our graduates go on to pursue careers in a broad range of sectors. “Our Department welcomes many UG international students from countries across the world including, India, Nigeria, China, UAE and many more. Below we have provided some useful information for 2021 applicants, including what to expect during your first year, and some first-hand experiences from our EESE students. If you have any further questions, myself and the team look forward to hearing from you.”

Your first year at Birmingham

Your first year as an Electronic and Electrical Engineering student at the University of Birmingham will be an interesting and exciting time full of new experiences and challenges.

Here are a few of the highlights you can expect from your first year:

  • Electronic and Electrical Engineering enables sensing, power, communication and control in increasingly autonomous technologies. You will learn the fundamentals of the subject through lectures, tutorials and exploratory lab classes.

  • You will gain an understanding of the essentials of digital electronics, software design and human-machine interactions.

  • The above skills will prepare the way for embedding decision-making and control into electrical machines, which you will study and apply in your second year, when every student designs and builds a robot.

  • Laboratory classes will take place in new state-of-the-art teaching facilities that contain over £400k worth of equipment dedicated to electronic and electrical engineering.

  • You will build sensor and transducer circuits in the laboratory and learn how to apply computer aided design and simulation tools.

  • Throughout your studies, you will be appointed a personal tutor who will be your mentor, helping you to make good use of feedback on your work and to develop the skills of the Birmingham Engineer – a graduate attractive to future employers.

  • We have an award winning student society, Electrical Engineering Society (EESE Soc). Led by students from across all year groups, EESE Soc organise a wealth of social and academic events for you to get involved in.

  • Our degree courses, which are accredited by the Institution of Engineering Technology (IET), are continually assessed and updated with input from industrial advisors alongside consultation with students.

Hear from our international graduates

One of the best ways to find out what life is really like as an international EESE student is to hear from them! Here, our recent graduates talk about their experiences and give real insight into student life at Birmingham. To see full student profiles as well as student videos and much more, please see our International Students Information page.

Jiaqi, an EESE Graduate"The School's facilities are very advanced and there are many resources available to help you learn and study better.

The course gives you plenty of chances to improve operation abilities, communication and cooperation."

Jiaqi, BEng Electronic and Electrical Engineering

Yangyi, an EESE Graduate"One of the best points of the course is the second year special integrated mechatronic project. In a group of six, we made a robotic car. By using the knowledge we had gained, we made the whole car, from the structure, to the internal circuit and the code in the microchip controlling movements."

Yangyi, BEng Electronic and Electrical Engineering

Zhiyan, an EESE Graduate

"The most attractive part of Electronic and Electrical Engineering is the combination of theoretical knowledge and practical skills. You learn about digital systems, electrical circuits and make your own robot. The lab sessions help understand the theories better and give you a sense of accomplishment.
Zhiyan, BEng Electronic and Electrical Engineering
