Alan Walters Lecture: Supply-side Policies - A Reconsideration

We are delighted to invite you to the next Alan Walters Lecture, which will be looking at how supply-side policies have evolved since the Thatcher era. This lecture will be delivered by Professor Sir Tim Besley from the London School of Economics.

As part of the lecture, Tim will be discussing the rationale behind new policies affecting areas such as infrastructure, regional policy and industrial strategy. Tim will explore how the competence of the state will need to evolve to deliver on new policies, especially when the UK exit from the EU. Following on from this, Tim will talk about whether a new division of responsibilities between the state and markets is warranted. 

Tim carries out notable roles including, President of the Econometric Society, Member of the Economic Growth and Institutions Programme of the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research and Associate Editor at Quarterly Journal of Economics. Tim was awarded CBE for his services to Social Science in 2010 and a Knight Bachelor for his services to Economics and Public Policy in 2018.

Tim has research interests in aspects of economic policy formation in developed and emerging market economies. He is one of the leading economists involved in restoring the study of political economy to prominence in mainstream economics.

The lecture will be followed by a reception with light refreshments and will take place in the Alan Walters Building - G03, 18:00 to 19:00, with networking between 19:00 and 19:30.
