Alan Walters Lecture: Measuring Economic Progress in a Digital World

We’re delighted to invite you to the next Alan Walters Lecture, which will look at measuring economic progress in a digital world. Delivering this lecture will be Professor Diane Coyle from the University of Cambridge.

As part of the lecture, Diane will be discussing how digital technology is changing the economy and what we need to measure so that we can better understand these changes. Following on from this, Diane will talk about why GDP is no longer an adequate way to measure economic progress, highlighting its shortcomings.

Diane has held a number of public service roles, including Vice Chair of the BBC Trust (2006-2014), member of the Competition Commission (2001-2009), and member of the Migration Advisory Committee (2009-2014).

Today, she is a member of the Natural Capital Committee, an expert adviser to the National Infrastructure Commission and a member of the Council of Economic Advisers. She was awarded a CBE for her contribution to the public understanding of economics in the 2018 New Year Honours.

Diane has particular research interests in the areas of economic statistics and the digital economy, and was the lead researcher on the Measuring the Modern Economy programme at the Economic Statistics Centre of Excellence.

The lecture will be followed by a reception with light refreshments and will take place in the Alan Walters Building - G03, 18:00 to 19:00, with networking between 19:00 and 19:30.
