Brexit - West Midlands Participatory Workshop

A growing number of studies are showing that the West Midlands will be more exposed to the economic impacts of leaving the European Union than other parts of the country.

This is due to its sectoral and trade composition, which makes it more sensitive and susceptible to any changes in UK-EU trade relations which may arise from Brexit. This principally relates to its advanced manufacturing sector (14.1% CVC of total WMCA GVA), which is embedded in “just-in-time” (JIT) systems, meaning that their supply chains and thus the regional economy is more dependent on frictionless trade with the EU. Nevertheless, adverse effects are likely to be more severe in the regions which have the least ability to respond to adverse shocks. Therefore, it is crucial that political and business leaders are well informed to be able to successfully adjust and adapt their economies.

City-REDI, supported by ESRC and The UK in a Changing EU, is hosting a West Midlands Brexit Workshop to bring together political and business leaders, together with academics and civil society organisations to discuss the likely impact of Brexit on the West Midlands economy and to agree on the urgent actions that need to be taken in the crucial months ahead.
