Helping Britain prosper in uncertain times

António Horta-Osório, Chief Executive of Lloyds Banking Group

António Horta-Osório will set out the emerging economic trends following the June referendum result, emphasising the importance of investment in areas such as infrastructure, housing and education to help put the country in the best possible position to emerge stronger from the uncertain times that lie ahead. He will give his views, as Chief Executive of the country’s largest retail and commercial bank since 2011, on the banking industry’s transformation in the wake of the financial crisis, and the challenges ahead for the industry and how it can play its full role in helping Britain to prosper in the wake of the vote to leave the European Union.

About António Horta-Osório

António Horta-Osório joined the board of Lloyds Banking Group in January 2011 as an Executive Director and became Group Chief Executive in March of that year. Previously he was the Chief Executive of Santander UK plc and Executive Vice President of Grupo Santander.  He was also Chairman of Santander Totta until 2011, where he was CEO between 2000-2006 and prior to that was CEO of Banco Santander Brazil.

Mr Horta-Osório started his career at Citibank Portugal where he was Head of Capital Markets. At the same time, he was an assistant professor at Universidade Catolica Portuguesa. He then worked for Goldman Sachs in New York and London. In 1993, he joined Grupo Santander as Chief Executive of Banco Santander de Negocios Portugal. He is also a former Non-Executive Director of the Court of the Bank of England and Governor of the London Business School.

He is a graduate of management and business administration at Universidade Catolica Portuguesa, and has a MBA from INSEAD where he was awarded the Henry Ford II prize – and has completed the Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School.
