REF Impact Case Studies: 'Looking Back and Looking Forward'

This short workshop is open to anybody with an interest in impact, but will be particularly relevant if you’re considering whether your research might form the basis for REF Impact, or if you are already in the process of developing an impact case.

The workshop begins with a presentation by Chris Lonsdale and Joe Sanderson from the Department of Procurement and Operations Management. Chris and Joe have extensive experience of doing impactful research and executive education with industry practitioners and public sector managers. They will share their thoughts on using academic research to generate useful insights for management practitioners.

Joe will look back at his experience of writing a REF 2014 Impact Case Study based on his UK Government funded research project on naval shipbuilding. The case, 'Performance Partnering on the Astute Submarine Programme' was one of eleven published by the Association of Business Schools in March 2015 to showcase the impact of Business School research - see http://www.birmingham.ac.uk/Documents/college-social-sciences/business/news/abs-impact-case-studies-publication-2015.pdf

Chris and Joe will look forward at the on-going development of their Impact Case Study for REF 2021. This case draws on their executive education programme and associated research with Rolls-Royce Aerospace. 

The workshop will close with a brief REF Impact overview from Lorna Hards, Research Planning Officer for CoSS and CAL, covering:

• Engagement and REF Impact
• What makes an Impact Case Study (in broad terms)
• Support available within the University
• ESRC Impact Accelerator Account, including how to apply for an award
