Predictor podcast for the fringe event at the Labour Party Conference: ‘Healthy Ageing in the 21st Century’
In advance of the Birmingham Policy Commission fringe event at the Labour Party Conference, Professor Jean McHale introduced the focus of the University’s third Commission which is exploring ‘Healthy Ageing in the 21st Century’.
As one of the academics leading this Commission, Jean discusses its examination of the policy and political implications of ‘healthy ageing’ in the UK. These are issues that affect us all as we are living longer, but who should pick up the tab for our (extended) healthcare? What is good ageing and what is a good death? How can they be achieved for the varied members of today’s multicultural society? Associated questions of rights and responsibilities were addressed at the Labour Party Conference fringe event that took place on 26 September 2011. The event was chaired by Professor Adam Tickell of the University of Birmingham and involved representatives from organisations such as Age UK (Mervyn Kohler) and the British Geriatrics Society (Finbarr Martin).
