City-REDI is delighted to invite you to our seminar series covering economics, economic geography, regional science, economic development, critical urbanism and urban policymaking.
On the 5 March, Dr Marianne Sensier from the University of Manchester will deliver a seminar titled "Assessing regional economic resilience for the implementation of local industrial strategies".
In this seminar we investigate how the Government’s Industrial Strategy could translate into Local Industrial Strategies for regional economies and what they imply for inclusive growth in the local economy. We assess economic resilience of UK regions by dating business cycle turning points in regional real GVA, employment and real productivity time series data to profile their recovery from the financial crisis. Our empirical work reveals that the business cycle in real productivity has not returned to its pre-recession peak level in the NUTS 1 regions (for data up to 2016) of Yorkshire and Humberside, Eastern England and London. Most UK region’s real GVA series have returned to pre-recession levels but rapid job growth in many regions (apart from the North East) has reduced productivity.
