Abstract

How do we learn which of our actions help ourselves and others? How willing are people to put in effort to help themselves and others? And how does social learning and decision-making change across the lifespan and in psychiatric and neurological disorders? Our lab studies the cognitive, computational and neural mechanisms of social learning and decision-making. In this talk, Dr. Patricia Lockwood will give an overview of recent projects in the lab including ageing related changes in the willingness to put in effort to help others and the neural mechanisms for how people learn to avoid actions that harm other people. Postdoctoral Research Fellow, Dr. Jo Cutler, will then give an overview about how the capacity to learn what helps others changes in older compared to younger adults and is linked to individual differences in psychopathic traits.

Abstract

Why do we find things effortful? Why does this effect our motivation to keep doing activities? and how does this change during social interactions? The Motivation and Social Neuroscience (MSN) lab uses a combination of novel behavioural tasks, computational modelling, neuroimaging, and psychopharmacology to understand the psychology and biology behind such questions. Today, Dr. Matt Apps will introduce you to his lab and some of their work, followed by short talks from lab members. Dr. Andrea Pisauro will tell you about the brain mechanisms that keep you from missing your deadlines, and Dr. Anthony Gabay will discuss how you go about deciding to leave a social interaction.
