CHBH Seminar Series: Dr Gemma Bale
- Location
- Gisebrt Kapp N224
- Dates
- Friday 31 January 2020 (13:00-14:00)
We are pleased to announce that Dr Gemma Bale, Research Associate in the Biomedical Optics Research Laboratory at UCL, will be delivering a seminar on Friday 31st January.
Dr Gemma Bale is a medical physicist building non-invasive monitors to measure cerebral oxygenation and metabolism in spaces where traditional brain monitoring isn’t possible.
She gained her PhD at UCL in 2016; developing an optical device to detect brain injury in newborn babies. At the University of Western Ontario, Canada and the Institute of Photonic Sciences, Barcelona, she developed blood flow monitors. In 2017, she won the Dietrich Lubbers Award (International Society on Oxygen Transport to Tissue), and founded fNIRS-UK.
Gemma is a passionate science communicator. She created the award-winning www.metabolight.org, and won the Isambard Kingdom Brunel Award (British Science Association, 2018).
Title: Illuminating metabolism in sickness and in health
Abstract: Diffuse optical brain monitoring are non-invasive technologies that are gaining traction in both neuroscience and intensive care medicine, as alternatives to traditional brain imaging. This seminar will highlight the science and technology behind two optical modalities (broadband near-infrared spectroscopy and diffuse correlation spectroscopy) which monitor brain oxygenation, blood flow and cellular metabolism in-vivo. Applications of the devices, including in neonatal brain injury and developmental neuroscience, will be presented, as well as a look into the future of optical brain monitoring.
