Counterfactual choices and social judgements in children
Abstract
In this talk I'll discuss work which explores how children’s understanding of choice influences their social judgements. Children’s ability to reflect on past choices, or think counterfactually about what could have happened, shows a protracted development across early to middle childhood – and this may have implications for how they judge the behaviour of others. In the first part of this talk I’ll discuss a study (only just wrapped data collection!) on how choice influences punishment and reward judgements in children in India, China and the US. Next I'll discuss a study examining whether children understand that choices are represented in the mind (e.g., someone might have had a choice to act differently, but not have known that they did!). Finally, I will talk about a new study idea that I’ve been developing which aims to investigate how understanding the cost of an action may drive an understanding of choice in young children.
