ATMPs are emerging as a new class of medicines that are advancing healthcare in the 21st century. However, their properties make them very different from traditional pharmaceutical medicines and they bring new, complex challenges in terms of storage, handling and maintaining a chain of custody from raw material to the patient.

Learning Outcomes:

• Basic cell biology that underpins ATMP medicines
• Technologies that are used to create ATMP medicines
• Differences between point of care and centralized manufacturing – and implications on delivery to the patient
• Sources of risk in delivering cell products to the clinic
• Overview of the GMP manufacturing facility

ATMP manufacturing historically relied on manual processing in small scale, open vessels. Today, technology plays an important role in achieving consistent production of stable ATMP products. This course, in partnership with Cytiva, will examine process technologies and their operation for end-to-end ATMP production.

The course will include:

• Theoretical learning in the classroom
• Hands on practical work using industrial cell processing technology
• Hands on practical work using point of care cryopreservation, cell processing, and transport technology

Who should attend?

Manufacturing and supply chain personnel, specialist R&D staff, process development staff and analytic scientists who are interested in ATMPs.

• This introductory course is designed for both new starters and employees wanting to upskill and understand the concepts of GMP and manufacturing for ATMPs.
• The course is arranged into 10 units. Each unit takes 30-50 minutes to complete and includes test your knowledge questions for self-assessment of learning.
• The course is delivered via an app that can be accessed on iOS, android and via desktop PC and Mac, meaning it can be conducted in your own time and at your own pace.

Learning outcomes:

• Develop an understanding of the basics of ATMPs and example products
• Learn about the fundamental cell biology that is relevant in living cell products

Good manufacturing practice (GMP) is essential for manufacturing medicines. Understanding GMP is important for employees working with advanced cell and gene therapies and vaccines. In this course attendees will learn about the importance of good manufacturing practice for medicines manufacturing and use advanced virtual reality technology to explore a GMP facility and undertake training in GMP competencies.

The course will include:

• Theoretical learning in the classroom
• Virtual reality training in cleanroom behaviours
• Site visit to a working hospital GMP cleanroom
• Dealing with process deviations

Who should attend?

Manufacturing and supply chain personnel, specialist R&D staff, process development staff and analytic scientists who are interested in ATMPs.

The complexity and variability in ATMP manufacturing and delivery requires precise data analysis and visualisation both at the manufacturing sites and points of care. The widespread emergence of big data leads to embracing statistical analysis and tools to accurately interpret and understand these ground-breaking discoveries and therapies.

The course will include:

• Basic statistical principles
• Statistical tests (t-test, ANOVA)
• Examples with real data
• Introduction to the programming language R
• Data analysis and visualisation using R

As ATMPs move from early clinical scale to market scale, industrial processing is important for ensuring consistency in cell processing and product quality. This course will give attendees an opportunity to look at technology advances in cell processing.

Learning outcomes:

• Develop an understanding of the facilities and technologies used to create ATMP medicines
• Learn how the lessons from gene therapy and viral vector production have been applied to vaccines
• Develop an understanding of the differences between point of care and centralized manufacturing – and implications on delivery to the patient
