The Institute of Cancer and Genomic Sciences is launching a research internship scheme for Summer 2022 aimed at students from ethnic minority backgrounds.
Background: The Institute of Cancer and Genomic Sciences runs several post-graduate MSc and MRes programme, including in cancer studies, genome biology and genomic medicine and data science. Historically, students from ethnic minorities are under-represented in our programmes. We would hope to help address this by providing research experience to encourage undergraduate students to consider post-graduate study.
The Scheme: University of Birmingham undergraduate science students will be offered funded placements of 6-8 weeks in one of the Institute’s 61 research groups (https://www.birmingham.ac.uk/research/cancer-genomics/index.aspx ). Students will be supervised by junior members of the group (post-docs and PhD students) and will experience how a University research team thinks, addresses questions, and find solutions to medical-relevant questions. Students will be offered a tax-free stipend of £250 per week and research expenses for the project will be provided. A list of projects available can be viewed here.
Eligibility: University of Birmingham students from ethnic minority backgrounds currently in years 1 or 2 of relevant undergraduate degrees. Please note that students must be UK citizens.
To apply: Please send a brief cover letter explaining why you would like to be considered for the internship scheme and indicating which projects appeal to you in particular by Friday 20th May. Please also include a one-page CV detailing your UoB undergraduate course, stage of study, end of year grades achieved so far, and eligibility for the scheme to:
