FAQs

Why have I been invited to take part?

You have been invited to take part in this study because you have been diagnosed with a missed miscarriage and you have chosen to have surgical management of miscarriage.

What is the purpose of the study?

When women have a miscarriage, one of the treatment options is a surgical procedure to remove the contents of the womb.

The procedure can either be carried out under a general anaesthetic (in this case you will be admitted to hospital) or whilst you are awake with appropriate local anaesthetic.

The purpose of this study is to test whether performing an ultrasound scan at the same time as the surgical procedure can help improve the success of treatment. At present, it is not routine practice to perform the procedure with an ultrasound scan.  The addition of an ultrasound scan is a research specific treatment in this study.

Four to eight weeks after treatment, we will also be doing a hysteroscopy (camera test of the womb) to see how effective surgical treatment is and to see if there is any scar tissue in the womb. It is not currently routine practice to perform hysteroscopy after miscarriage.

Do I have to take part?

Participation in our study is entirely voluntary. If you decide to take part, you will be asked to sign a consent form. If you do not wish to take part, you will not have to give a reason and your decision will not affect the care you will receive. Similarly, if you do decide to take part, you will be able to withdraw from the study at any time and without giving a reason, and without any effect on the medical care that you receive. You will be given a minimum of 24 hours to consider the information that you have been given before deciding if you would like to take part.
