Process Evaluation

In order to evaluate the fidelity of implementation of PD COMM interventions, a process evaluation will be carried out alongside PD COMM.  It's focus is on both the participants who take part in PD COMM, and the Speech and Language Therapists who provide trial treatment.

Here you can find information about the Process Evaluation for Speech and Language Therapists.

About the Process Evaluation

As speech and language therapists or therapy assistants working on the PD COMM study you may be responsible for delivering Lee Silverman Voice Treatment (LSVT), NHS standard speech and language therapy or both. As part of the PD COMM trial we will be carrying out a process evaluation which wants to explore your views and your experiences regarding your involvement in the trial. We want to know your opinions so that we can understand better the results from the main trial. More specifically we would like to investigate:

  • How you feel about your roles and responsibilities as PD COMM therapists.
  • Your experiences of delivering the PD COMM interventions and how they might change/adapt as the trial progresses.
  • Your expectations and beliefs in terms of the potential impact that PD COMM interventions can have on patients.
  • How your previous experience and relevant training can play a role in shaping your work in the PD COMM trial.

What will you have to do as part of the PD COMM process evaluation?

We will ask you to please:

  1. Complete a brief online questionnaire regarding your previous experience and familiarity with the PD COMM interventions. You will be asked to complete this questionnaire at two time points, the start and the end of your role as a PD COMM therapist.
  2. ake part in two phone interviews, midway through your involvement in PD COMM and at the end of your participation. The interviews will take place at a date and time that is convenient for you and are not expected to last more than an hour.
  3. Record key reflections using a Critical Incident Record form (which we will email you shortly). You may complete this form as and when you face an important situation that stands out as being particularly challenging, rewarding or exemplary in any other way. You will also be able to include these reflections in your CPD portfolio.

All the information that we collect will remain strictly confidential and all data will be securely stored under the provisions of the 1998 Data Protection Act. The process evaluation will be carried out by researchers at Bangor University and Glasgow Caledonian University, and managed at the University of Birmingham by the Birmingham Clinical Trials Unit (BCTU).
