Module Overview
This module is designed to assist students develop their skills of continuing professional development (CPD) as part of their preparation for practice as a registered healthcare professional. Students will be supported to identify learning needs and undertake action planning followed by further independent learning to address gaps in knowledge in underpinning basic and clinical sciences. On-line resources and activities, supported by surgery-based tutorials, will be provided to guide independent study. Specific support for anatomy learning will include observation visits to the prosectorium.
Students will also act as peer facilitators for anatomy action learning sets for undergraduate students, enabling development of mentoring skills as part of professional development. The module will also provide further learning centred on preparation for clinical practice, to aid understanding of the professional and regulatory context of practice.
Students will work towards becoming fit for practice by completing a range of mandatory skills such as Basic Life Support and Manual Handling etc.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the component students should be able to:
- Evaluate the place of continuing professional development (CPD) within physiotherapy practice and demonstrate skills of self-evaluation, reflective practice, and compiling and using portfolio-based evidence to support ongoing CPD
- Identify learning needs, plan learning and undertake action to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the basic and clinical sciences underpinning physiotherapy practice
- Critically evaluate the importance of understanding their own, and others’, values, attitudes and identity within the context of healthcare practice
- Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the importance of professional accountability, professional values, fitness to practice and public expectations as part of becoming a registered allied health professional
- Demonstrate fitness to practice related to competent completion of the mandatory skills required for practice education experience
