Module Overview
The module aims to prepare the student for clinical practice within the field of musculoskeletal physiotherapy, acknowledging emerging evidence surrounding the underlying influence of psychosocial factors within musculoskeletal practice. Practical sessions will involve acquisition of relevant assessment and management knowledge and skills. Students will be introduced to a breadth of evidence-based management approaches and these will be critically applied to a range of dysfunctions across the upper and lower quadrant using a framework of clinical reasoning within a biopsychosocial model of practice.
Learning outcomes
By the end of the module students should be able to:
- Critically discuss the biopsychosocial model of care and its relationship to musculoskeletal dysfunction and demonstrate capability to work in a patient-centred manner with patients and carers
- Discuss consequences of disruptions to normal structure and function as a result of pathology, injury and ageing and the implications of these for management planning.
- Demonstrate practical knowledge of key skills and range of approaches appropriate for assessing and managing patients with musculoskeletal dysfunction, with due regard for safety, legal and ethical issues.
- Critically evaluate the use of key skills for assessing and managing musculoskeletal dysfunctions with respect to the best available evidence
