Module Overview
This module will provide students with the opportunity to acquire a basic understanding of Trauma Science, ranging from epidemiology to current uses of prosthetics and rehabilitation protocols. The diagnosis of trauma will be explored with a focus on its types, causes and risk factors. Possible underlying strategies for managing patients with different types of trauma will also be discussed according to evidence-based current practices.
Learning outcomes
- Demonstrate an understanding of the breadth and magnitude of the spectrum of trauma types that can affect patients
- Demonstrate the ability to critically analyse published research data relating to trauma science, aetiology, management and complications
- Demonstrate an understanding of the assessment process used to determine the severity of complications of trauma
- To show that students are able to apply a multi-disciplinary and cross-specialty approach to the assessment and management of trauma afflicted patients.

Method of Teaching
Combinations of lectures, tutorials, as well as guided and self-directed activities including case studies and web-based scientific journal club forums to augment their basic understanding of evidenced-based practice in trauma science. The formal taught component will be delivered over 5 full days and will be supplemented by attendance at dedicated seminars and web-based discussion forum will be set up to discuss journals.
