Current and Emerging Drugs in Key Therapeutic Areas

This is a core module on the PGCert Drug Discovery and Development programme.

Module Overview
This module will provide an understanding of what makes a successful drug. Taking a mechanistic approach the module will cover the key therapeutic areas and consider what are the pathways which have historically been considered targetable and what are the new therapeutic entities emerging. Through this approach, invaluable cross-therapy area knowledge and an understanding of drug re-purposing will be instilled.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this module students should be able to:

  • Explain the biology and management of key therapeutic areas and how this is relevant to particular targeted therapeutics
  • Demonstrate that some biological pathways are relevant across different therapeutic areas and may lead to drug repurposing
  • Explain how new drug classes and therapeutic approaches are broadening opportunities for emerging therapeutics across key therapy areas
