Her Majesty The Queen

We are deeply saddened by the death of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II. The University of Birmingham was founded in 1900 by Royal Charter, from Queen Victoria, and we feel incredibly privileged to have continued this relationship with Queen Elizabeth II in her role as University Visitor. We are grateful for Her Majesty’s support for our University and were honoured to host her visits to our campus on many occasions throughout her reign.

Below is a tribute from Professor Adam Tickell, Vice-Chancellor and Principal.

“Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II was an inspirational public servant with an unwavering commitment and passion for public and voluntary service. I have spoken with a number of colleagues who shared fond memories of meeting the Queen on her numerous visits to the University over the years, and I greatly admire her sense of duty and her devotion to a life of service. As the longest-serving Monarch in British history, I ā€“ and Iā€™m sure many in the country and around the world ā€“ are grateful for her contributions to British life, culture, society and so much more.”

  • In 2000, Her Majesty attended the University’s Centenary celebrations.
  • In 2015, Her Majesty The Queen, accompanied by His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh, unveiled a commemorative plaque at the opening ceremony of the new Birmingham Dental Hospital and School of Dentistry at Pebble Mill, Edgbaston.
