Honorary Professor Graeme Betts CBE

In his first public lecture since being appointed as an Honorary Professor at the University of Birmingham, Graeme Betts will reflect on his distinguished career in social care, health, and local government.

He will share his insights on leadership for social justice, the role of evidence in informing decision making, and the benefits of co-producing with people and communities. Graeme will also consider the opportunities open to the new government as the UK enters a new chapter in its social policy.

Social care is often portrayed in the media through the lens of crisis – either in relation to its own capacity, workforce and quality, or its impact on health services. Whilst there is no doubt that social care has, and will continue to experience major challenges, the sector improves the lives and wellbeing of many people on a day-to-day basis and makes a positive contribution to addressing social inequalities in society. It also provides rewarding career opportunities for a wider diversity of practitioners and professionals.

The lecture will be chaired by Professor Nick Vaughan-Williams, Head of the College of Social Sciences, and responses to Graeme’s lecture will be provided by Melanie Williams, the President of the Association of Directors of Adult Social Services, and Professor Catherine Needham, Lead of the Social Care Cluster in the School of Social Policy.
