How did the A2B programme help you prepare for University?

The A2B programme is the main reason I got into University of Birmingham but not only did it provide me with entry into a Russell Group University but it gave me a solid foundation to university life at UoB. The summer essay meant that I was more confident writing in an academic style when I arrived, I had a clear understanding of what was expected in an assignment and I knew my way around the campus. I met my closest friend at the university on the first day of the A2B programme. So by the start of my degree I already felt like I belonged which seems trivial but this provided me with confidence that put me in a position to succeed academically and socially.

What would be your advice or top tips to anyone about to start studying your programme in the College of Medicine and Health?

It would be not to be afraid to ask questions and ask for help as people all want you to succeed. Make use of the opportunities provided. Studying biomedical science can be intense so join a sport or society to help reduce the stress. Enjoy your first year socially and get to know your seminar tutors and your lectures as building good relationships can lead to opportunities.

What has been your biggest achievement at University?

There’s too many. First of all, graduating with a 2.1. Organising a care home visit as part of my PSA and due to the relationship I established, the visit became annual.

“Be you, as being different will help you stand out. Make use of the open days to ask questions to identify what the university is looking for and look at all the grants and scholarships that are available for you.”

What has been your biggest challenge at university and how have you overcome it?

I think my biggest challenge was living at home as it made integrating into the university life more difficult. But by joining as many societies and being more open minded it facilitated the transition.

What other opportunities has studying at university given you?

Studying at university has built my networking skills and as a result I did an 9-week summer research project which gave me first-hand experience in a lab outside an academic setting. At my time at university I got the opportunity to try many new things like archery, organising charity events and public speaking.

Sum up your time at the University of Birmingham in three words.

  • Interesting
  • Challenging
  • Memorable

What do you hope to go on to do in the future (after Graduation)?

I hope to complete a masters in bioinformatics and then join a research team.
