Guidance on healthcare students' name badges
As part of your degree programme you will be undertaking professional placements within clinical settings and will be required to wear a name badge to identify yourself as a student. The purpose of this policy is to promote safety and security of patients, NHS staff and students on placement.
This is separate to your University ID card and is required so that you are identifiable to other healthcare professionals and to patients that you come into contact with. In order to ensure your name badge appropriately identifies you, we ask that you submit your preferences using the link at the bottom of this page. Please read the guidance below on what is acceptable and what your options are for different parts of the name badge.
Preferred name
Many people are often addressed by commonly accepted shortened versions of their full name (eg Andy for Andrew, Bob for Robert etc). If you wish this to be displayed on your name badge then that is acceptable.
If your preferred name is not recognisable from your official name, then you must update your student records so that it is officially recorded (you will be able to do this via an app once you start at the university).
The University will NOT accept nicknames on student name badges.
Personal Pronouns
You have the option of including your personal pronouns on your name badge. This is an optional addition to the badge for those students who want it; if you prefer not to have your pronouns displayed then you are not required to do this, and you will not be expected to provide an explanation for why you have made this decision.
Further information on why you may wish to do so can be found here.
Replacement Name Badges
Please take the time to ensure the information submitted is as correct as possible as replacement badges will normally incur a charge (eg lost name badges incur a £10 replacement charge). However, if your details change (and your student record is updated) then please contact your programme office who will be able to order a replacement badge. Examples of appropriate details changes would be legal name changes or personal pronoun changes during your course.
