Athena SWAN in the College of Medicine and Health

Athena SWAN has been an integral part of the College of Medicine and Health (formerly College of Medical and Dental Sciences(MDS)) since 2011. During this time there have been numerous key achievements including an increase in the number of women in leadership positions and an increase in female academic staff being promoted to senior research fellow, senior lecturer and professor levels.

How we have progressed

Since the formation of the Women in Academic Medicine (WAMS) team in 2009, the College of Medical and Dental Sciences Athena SWAN taskforce has worked hard to continue to build upon the changes and successes that have been made. Below is a timeline how Athena SWAN has been established in MDS.

What is Athena SWAN?

Athena SWAN is a charter managed by Advance HE. Based upon ten key principles, being part of Athena SWAN means organisations have a responsibility to adopt the principles within policies, practices, action plans and culture with the aim of recognising good practice towards the advancement of gender equality, representation and progression. In May 2015, the Athena SWAN Charter expanded to include professional, support and technical staff, trans staff and students, and male underrepresentation where this occurs.
