Bridging Research and IP exploitation
Vicky Kosti (MSc, LL.M), MDS UoB Technology Transfer Officer, European Patent Attorney
This Masterclass will use a new cancer target as an example to explain the process of protecting basic research by securing IPR. It will also explain how IPR can be exploited and commercialised.
Roy and Jodie will present on their experience. There will be opportunities to ask questions and to reflect on how participants might identify opportunities for securing IPR in relation to their own research.

Previously, she worked in private practice for 14 years as a senior associate patent attorney. She has particular experience in patentability assessment, drafting patent applications, patent application prosecution, and defending/attacking recently granted patents through Opposition at the European Patent Office. Further, she has significant experience in carrying out patent portfolio due diligence, freedom to operate/patent validity assessment and advising on commercial strategies. Her recent expertise relates to technologies within the cell and gene therapy field, but she has previously worked in many different technological areas within the life sciences. She works on a daily basis with scientists in-house at the Cell and Gene Therapy Catapult, with scientists within academia, and with UK biotech companies.
