For admission onto our direct entry programmes you must meet both the academic requirements as well as the English language requirements.
Academic requirements
The GPA requirements depend on your current overseas programme. Please contact the International Office/International Affairs Office at your university for further information.
If your CGPA is slightly below the requirements at the time of application, we may be able to issue you a Conditional Offer. The Conditional Offer will be subject to increasing your CGPA by the time you join the University of Birmingham.
As a guide we usually require a minimum CGPA of 3.0/4.0.
English Language
You will need to meet one of the following admission requirements for English Language:
Chemistry, Engineering, Mathematics, Materials, Physics programmes:
- IELTS – 6.0 overall with no less than 5.5 in any band
- TOEFL – 80 with no less than 21 in Reading, 20 in Listening, 22 in Speaking and 21 in Writing
- PTE Academic 51 in all four skills
- Alternative qualifications
Computer Science programmes:
- IELTS – 6.5 overall with no less than 6.0 in any band
- TOEFL – 88 with no less than 19 in Reading, 19 in Listening, 21 in Speaking and 19 in Writing
- PTE Academic - 67 overall with 64 in all four skills
- Alternative qualifications
Students are strongly advised to ensure they have taken their English language test in plenty of time.
The University of Birmingham offers Pre-Sessional English language programmes for students who do not meet the English Language requirement (also known as English for Academic Purposes (EAP).
NOTE: UKVI IELTS is required for entry onto pre-sessional programmes.
