Why are rare earth elements/magnets critical in a modern society?

Professor Allan Walton will discuss how rare earth permanent magnets have shaped our lives over the past 35 years. He will detail how these magnets are made, what they are used for and how it has moulded his research over the last 25 years. Professor Walton will then delve into the reasons why these materials have come under considerable supply constraints and how his research groups activities have tackled these problems by; developing recycling solutions; changing the way in which magnets are manufactured; and by changing both EU and UK policy.

Allan is a Professor of Critical and Magnetic Materials and is the ex-chair of the UK Magnetics Society. Professor Walton also heads the university's Magnetic Materials Group and is the Co-Director of the Birmingham Centre for Strategic Elements and Critical Materials.
