What would you recommend students should do at university, over and above their academic study, to make them more employable in the graduate market?
I would recommend students take the time to explore themselves. University offers a unique period in life, along with an open and supportive environment, to focus on self-discovery. Use this time to reflect deeply on who you are and what you truly want to do. Pursuing something you are genuinely passionate about not only brings fulfillment but also aligns your efforts naturally, making your actions feel effortless and authentic. While self-exploration is a lifelong journey, university provides a great space and opportunity to start that journey and experiment with different paths. In addition to self-exploration, I encourage students to keep an open mind. Be willing to try new things, embrace challenges, and give anything that sparks your curiosity a chance. Engage with the world and take advantage of the diverse opportunities available. These experiences not only enrich your perspective but also make you more adaptable and well-rounded in the graduate market.
What are your fondest memories of the University and what would you say to anyone currently considering studying at Birmingham?
My fondest memories of the University are the peaceful walks around its beautiful campus. The University offers plenty of open spaces, from lush green grass to quiet, well-designed study areas. These spaces provided a serene environment where I could reflect, think deeply, and explore my thoughts. To anyone considering studying at Birmingham, I would say this: the University not only provides exceptional academic resources and support but also fosters personal growth in a stunning and inspiring environment. It’s a place where you can truly focus on both your studies and self-discovery.
What extracurricular activities did you get involved in as a student?
I had the honor of delivering the Graduation Speech as a Distinguished Student, which was a truly memorable experience and an opportunity to reflect on our collective journey and achievements. In addition, I served as a Student Representative for my classmates in the School of Mathematics. In this role, I represented their interests and feedback regarding lectures and the overall university experience through the Guild of Students, the Students’ Union at the University of Birmingham.
Why did you originally apply to Birmingham?
I studied for BSc in Mathematics and Applied Mathematics at Central University of Finance and Economics in China, and the MSc in Mathematical Finance at University of Birmingham is a collaborative program with my undergraduate university. This partnership provided a seamless pathway to pursue advanced studies at a globally recognized institution, enabling me to deepen my expertise in applying mathematical principles to the finance industry. I deeply appreciate this opportunity.
