Dean Miller
Dean is an ex-GB Paralympic athlete and advocate for disabled sport. He is a coach of the GB Paralympic Futures programme and is helping to support athletes with their challenges in disability sport.
He is also furthering the aspirations of young people in athletics, from the beginning of their journey in schools and kids’ athletics sessions, and at the University of Birmingham, where he nurtures young adults to balance their education, life and athletics. His work at the University guides young adults into being more responsible and educated humans, as well as enhancing and advancing their athletic credentials.
What’s your connection to the University?
My connection with the University is vast: I did both my undergrad and Masters here (I first came to Birmingham as fresher in 2007- this year marks 15 years of calling the city my home), continued training here as a Sports Graduate when I made the Paralympic Games in 2012. Post my athletics career, I working at the University of Birmingham School until 2019 in the PE department. I now work full time coaching the University’s Athletics Team.
Do you have any favourite sports? What do you like about them?
My favourite sport is without doubt athletics, and I’m so incredibly fortunate to now work in an arena I feel so passionate about!
What are you most looking forward to during the Games?
I’m looking forward to the games showcasing how great Birmingham is, and the University playing a majoring role in hosting and staging events.
How does it feel to know your alma mater is hosting the Games?
I’m incredibly proud that the University is playing such a prominent role in a home games, the University has given, and continues to give and develop me so much over the last decade and a half, therefore I’m excited for everyone else to get a little of what I get every day!
How does it feel to be selected as a batonbearer?
I feel very privileged to be asked to be a batonbearer. It will certainly enhance my spirit during the games further.
