Essentials of Cell Biology & Physiology

In the first part of the module, the components of the cell are introduced and discussed in terms of their structure and function. This includes sections on membranes and membrane bound organelles, and the flow of materials inside the cell. There will be an emphasis on understanding the experimental basis. The next part of the module covers the basics of human and animal physiology. It covers underlying concepts such as homeostasis, and outlines in more detail the cardiovascular system, endocrinology, immunology, and neurophysiology. It aims to highlight the important relationships between these systems and the connections between cell biology, anatomy and physiology.

The module will have three practicals that will permit the students to study aspects of physiology, immunology, endocrinology. These practicals are tightly allied to the lectures and are designed to facilitate a better appreciation and understanding.

By the end of the module, students should be able to:

  • Understand concepts of cell biology and the relationship between cell biology and functionality for the physiological systems studied;
  • Carry out and understand practical exercises in various aspects of cell biology and physiology;
  • Undertake independent learning activities in an enquiry-based manner.
