Chemistry for Biochemists 2

The module builds upon the principles and concepts of inorganic and organic chemistry developed through the Year 1 pre-requisite module 03 23617. The material presented is of direct relevance to students of biochemistry, and includes topics such as: coordination chemistry (with emphasis on life systems), spectroscopic techniques, integrated problem solving, advanced NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry and thermodynamics. The practical chemistry component of the module develops practical skills associated with basic organic chemistry, and serves to reinforce the lecture material; the practical course also includes aspects relating to Health and Safety.

By the end of the module you should be able to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the fundamental chemical principles and concepts presented (in organic, inorganic and physical chemistry);
  • Apply their acquired knowledge to the solution of chemical and biochemical problems within the context of the course;
  • Be able to determine the molecular structure of simple molecules through the application of spectroscopic techniques (e.g. NMR, IR, MS, UV/Vis);
  • Demonstrate competence with a number of synthetic (experimental) skills, and analytical techniques (through the laboratory course);
