The MRes is a 1 year full-time advanced course, comprising lectures and a major research project. The course can also be taken on a part-time basis over two or three years.
This term focusses on fundamental engineering and scientific principles. You will complete compulsory modules which underpin the accreditation requirements of an MRes in chemical engineering. In addition, you will have a choice of specialised optional modules. Teaching is delivered predominantly through lectures and tutorials, with assessment provided using a comprehensive mix of coursework and examination.
You’ll explore concepts and processes in advanced chemical engineering. Learn how to find solutions to the issues faced by many sectors from food and pharmaceuticals to healthcare and energy. You could be developing new techniques for medical treatments or discovering clean energy solutions. Deepen your knowledge and expand your research skills with a major project.
This is a one year, full-time programme comprising a major research project and six taught modules which are taken intermittently throughout the year (1 year full-time, 2 years part-time).
This course consists of 180 credits, one- third from compulsory and optional taught modules and two- thirds from your research project. The dissertation is completed under the direction of a project supervisor which will give you the opportunity to work one-to-one with a leading expert in their field.

The School of Chemical Engineering at Birmingham is one of the three largest centres for the postgraduate education of chemical engineers in the UK. We have pioneered development and research in rapidly expanding new areas such as pharmaceuticals and bioproducts, food processing, hydrogen fuel cells and energy research, as well as having leading-edge groups in healthcare technologies
If you are proposing your own research topic, you will need to submit a research proposal. It’s a key part of your application, so take your time. Your potential supervisors will use it to decide if your research is something they can support.
Your proposal should be a clear and concise summary of your research. It generally consists of an outline of your proposed research project, including your main research questions and the methods you intend to use.
You should also comment on the potential impact and importance of your intended research and on how your work would interact with current trends in your academic field. It should illustrate the relevance of your topic to the research interests and expertise of the staff within your chosen department.

If you are an international student, you will need to demonstrate you have a suitable level of English proficiency, usually through the form of an IELTS or equivalent qualification.
