Mr Adam Farquharson is a Consultant Colorectal Surgeon and Clinical Director for Surgery at Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust. He is also Training Programme Director for Professional Development at the NHS England (NHSE) West Midlands School of Surgery and has responsibilities for the delivery of the GMC Generic Capabilities Framework to trainees and trainers in surgery in the West Midlands region.
Following postgraduate research and the award of a Master in Education (MEd) for published work on the simulation enhanced acquisition of surgical skills, he was appointed as a Fellow of the Higher Education Authority (FHEA) in 2016. He is a Fellow of the Faculty of Surgical Trainers at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and sits on the Specialist Advisory Committee for General Surgery at JCST.
In a collaboration with the Health Services Management Centre at the University of Birmingham and the NHSE School of Surgery, he leads the Leadership Programme for Surgical Trainees. This programme runs as a strand through all phases of postgraduate surgical training in the West Midlands and has attracted national acclaim for its innovative approach to engaging trainees in medical leadership prior to appointment to substantive Consultant roles in the NHS in the UK.
