Dr Hermine Graham is a Consultant Clinical Psychologist and Lecturer on the Doctorate in Clinical Psychology course at the University of Birmingham, UK. She has led a programme of collaborative research and service innovation in the NHS focused on the integration of substance misuse treatment into mental health services. This innovation has been quoted as a model of good practice in Department of Health policy guidelines for the treatment of ‘dual diagnosis’ and has influenced NHS services.

Her recent research involved a RCT that evaluated a brief motivational intervention for substance misuse during a psychiatric admission. She has authored papers in academic peer reviewed journals, and is lead author of a prize winning edited book, 2 psychological treatment manuals and a number of book chapters. She has worked in the NHS for over 20 years and has provided psychology services within adult mental health and addiction services. She has specialist expertise in Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), the assessment and treatment of severe and common mental health problems and addiction. She has substantial national and international experience of providing staff training and consultancy.

Biography

Dr Hermine Graham is a Consultant Clinical Psychologist and Lecturer, having qualified with a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology in 1994. She is a Chartered Psychologist and member of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and the British Association for Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies (BABCP) and registered with the Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC). She completed a Post –qualification Diploma in Cognitive Therapy at the Oxford Cognitive Therapy Centre in 1997. She has worked in the NHS since 1993 and has primarily provided psychology services within the adult mental health and substance misuse specialty and has forensic experience.

Research

My interests include drug and alcohol use and mental health: development and evaluation of cognitive treatments for drug and alcohol use in mental health; factors influencing cannabis use and binge drinking in young people and the role of mental health and resilience; the role of thoughts in influencing behaviour and behaviour change.

Other activities

Dr Graham has served on Department of Health and Public Health expert advisory groups to develop ‘dual diagnosis’ national policy guidance. She sits on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapy. From January 2017 she will join the Responsible Gambling Strategy Board as a committee member.
