Following an MSc degree in Theoretical Physics, Dr Carullo obtained a PhD in Physics from University of Pisa in 2022. He then held a Della Riccia postdoctoral fellowship at University of Jena and a Maria Skłodowska Curie fellowship (Interactions program) at the Niels Bohr Institute. In 2024, he joined the University of Birmingham as an Assistant Professor.

  • Laurea Magistrale (MSc) in Theoretical Physics of Fundamental Interactions, University of Pisa (2017)

Biography

After an MSc degree in Theoretical Physics of Fundamental Interactions, with part of the thesis work developed at Nikhef (Amsterdam), Dr Carullo obtained a PhD in Physics from University of Pisa in 2022. The topic of both theses was Black Hole Spectroscopy, with a focus on data analysis and fundamental physics measurements through Gravitational Waves. He then held a Della Riccia postdoctoral fellowship at the Theoretisch-Physikalisches Institut at University of Jena, working on multi-messenger astrophysics, and a Maria Skłodowska Curie fellowship within the Interactions program at the Niels Bohr Institute in Copenhagen, working on spectroscopy and highly eccentric binaries. In 2024, he joined the University of Birmingham as an Assistant Professor, as part of the Institute for Gravitational Wave Astronomy.

Dr Carullo's interests are centred around the strong-field dynamics of black holes, including their vibrational spectra, and the two-body problem in General Relativity. His research covers both data analysis aspects, primarily through Bayesian Inference, and modelling components with a focus on observational applications.
