Dr Prathiba (Preth) De Silva was appointed as a Clinical Lecturer in Obstetrics & Gynaecology in February 2023 and divides his time between the Birmingham Women’s Hospital as a clinical registrar, and the Department of Metabolism and Systems Science (MSS) at the University of Birmingham as a post-doctoral researcher.

Preth’s main interests lie in evidence synthesis and clinical trials related to gynaecology and gynaecological surgery. He has published his work in a number of high quality peer-reviewed journals, including the British Journal of Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Human Reproduction, the European Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology and Reproductive Biology and the Journal of Minimally Invasive Gynecology and presented his output both nationally and internationally.

Biography

Preth obtained his medical degree (MBBS) from Imperial College London in 2014, where he also achieved an intercalated BSc in Medical Sciences with Global Health. Preth received the Enid Linder and the Cambrian Society prizes during his undergraduate degree. He also received a Wellbeing of Women award to conduct research on his elective, which he spent investigating maternal mortality in Takoradi, Ghana.

Preth was successfully appointed to an Academic Foundation Post in Obstetrics & Gynaecology in the West Midlands Deanery in 2014 where he joined Professor Arri Coomarasamy’s team as a research fellow. Following this, Preth commenced specialty training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in 2016 rotating through New Cross Hospital and Birmingham Women’s Hospital where he took time out of training to undertake a Clinical Teaching Fellowship under the supervision of Professor Justin Clark in 2018. Here, he spent a year designing and implementing teaching innovations for the Year 5 Obstetrics & Gynaecology medical students rotating through Birmingham Women’s Hospital.

Preth then undertook a PhD entitled “The diagnosis and treatment of endometrial pathology in the outpatient setting” in 2019 under the supervision of both Professor Justin Clark and Professor Arri Coomarasamy which was awarded by the University of Birmingham in 2023. After returning back to specialty training in 2022, Preth was appointed as a Clinical Lecturer to Professor Justin Clark in 2023 splitting his time between the University of Birmingham as a post-doctoral researcher and Birmingham Women’s Hospital as a specialist registrar.

Research

Preth’s research interests lie in evidence synthesis and clinical trials related to gynaecology and gynaecological surgery.

Preth has published a number of systematic reviews investigating how best to provide and perform outpatient hysteroscopy which has culminated in the creation of a national RCOG green-top guideline in outpatient hysteroscopy which is currently under review.

Preth has successfully designed, conducted and closed a pilot randomised-controlled trial investigating the role of routine ultrasound and hysteroscopy against current standard practice in patients who have retained pregnancy tissue following miscarriage (HYsteroscopic Miscarriage MaNagement; HYMMN trial).

Preth belongs to Professor Justin Clark’s research team which has expertise in conducting systematic reviews, observational studies and multi-centre trials evaluating interventions and health technologies for diagnosing and treating gynaecological conditions.
