Athanasios Tsolakis is Professor of Thermodynamics and Director of Research and Knowledge Transfer for the School of Engineering.  Thanos has published over 150 research papers in scientific journals and conference proceedings in the areas of fuels and fuel treatments, low carbon and carbon free energy carriers, combustion and vehicle emissions control technologies such as environmental catalysts and aftertreatment systems. He researches synergies between fuel, propulsion and after-treatment technologies for cleaner road vehicles.

His research covers both fundamentals and industrial applications and he has received funding awards from Research Councils UK, Innovate UK, Horizon2020 in collaboration with industry.

Biography

Thanos obtained BEng in Manufacturing Engineering from Technological Education Institute of Piraeus in Greece in 1999 and BEng in Mechanical Engineering in 2001 from the University of Birmingham in the UK. Three years later (2004) obtained his PhD from the University of Birmingham.

From Birmingham, Thanos moved to Johnson Matthey plc, where he was a Research Scientist (2004-2005), and worked at their Technology Centre on R&D projects for their catalytic technologies. In October 2005, he joined the University of Birmingham as a Lecturer 2005- 2010, Senior Lecturer (2010- 2012), Reader of Thermodynamics (2012 – 2016).

He was appointed to the Chair of Thermodynamics in 2016.

In 2007 he was elected member of the IMechE and become Chartered Mechanical Engineer (CEng) and in 2009 he was elected Fellow of the IMechE (FIMechE). In 2011 he was elected Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA) after completing an award winning Post Graduate Certificate in Learning and Teaching in higher education.

In 2012 was appointed the Research Excellence Framework (REF2014) lead and Director of Research and Knowledge Transfer for the School of Mechanical Engineering. Since January 2016 Thanos is the Director of Research and Knowledge Transfer for the School of Engineering.
